Multi-Stage Endurance Event in Danbury

The Hanging Man is a multi-stage endurance triathlon held in Danbury, North Carolina. The course traverses the landscapes of Hanging Rock State Park and the surrounding areas, featuring a combination of cycling, running, and multiple swimming segments.

The event starts and finishes at the Green Heron Ale House. The course stages include:

  • 30-mile bike ride: This segment starts at the Ale House, leads to the base of Sauratown Mountain, climbs Sauratown Mountain Road, and returns to the starting point.
  • Initial run and swim: Participants run to the Hanging Rock bluffs trail towards the lake for two 500-yard swim crossings.
  • Mountain run: The route passes through the campground and ascends to Moore’s Knob Tower. This section includes a ridge run across rugged terrain before returning to the lake.
  • Additional lake crossings: The course includes two more 500-yard lake swims interspersed with running segments around the water.
  • Final stages: The route continues past waterfalls and back to the bluffs, followed by a swim in the Dan River and a final run back to the Green Heron Ale House.

Participation is subject to qualification requirements. Athletes must have completed a 70.3 distance triathlon in under 6 hours or a 140.6 distance triathlon in under 14 hours within the past 12 months. Comparable endurance experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Organizers suggest the use of swimrun-specific wetsuits and running shoes suitable for water transitions.
