Bear Triathlon
The Bear Triathlon is a multi-sport event held at Lums Pond State Park in Delaware. Sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the competition features a flat and fast course design that utilizes the park's natural landscape. The event includes individual categories and relay options for teams of two or three people. Participants can choose from three primary formats:
- Olympic Triathlon: A 1500 meter swim (two loops), a 23 mile bike (three loops), and a 6 mile run (two loops).
- Sprint Triathlon: A 750 meter swim (one loop), a 10 mile bike (one loop), and a 3 mile run (one loop).
- Youth Triathlon: Various distances for ages 7-15, ranging from a 50-150 yard swim, 2-6 mile bike, and 0.5-1 mile run.
The swim takes place in Lums Pond with a beach entry wave start. Wetsuits are generally permitted if water temperatures remain below 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The bike leg is conducted on paved roads open to vehicle traffic, supported by police at turns. The run course consists of a mix of asphalt and natural surfaces, including grass and packed dirt.
The transition area is located at Area 1 within the park. Athletes receive a finisher medal and a short-sleeve cotton t-shirt upon completion. Participation requires in-person check-in with a valid photo ID, and all competitors must be at least 14 years old for adult distances.
