Wild Driftless Adventure Race
The Wild Driftless Adventure Race takes place in Elkader, Iowa, within the scenic Driftless Region. This area is characterized by limestone bluffs, trout streams, and old-growth forests. The event is an orienteering-based multi-sport competition where participants use maps to navigate between checkpoints. Participants can enter as soloists or in teams of two to four people.
The event offers two distinct course options:
- 9-Hour Adventure Race: This course includes 8-22 km of trekking on foot, 32-55 km of biking on a mix of gravel roads, paved roads, and trails, and 3-13 km of paddling in flat-water or rivers. It also features unspecified special tasks.
- 5-Hour Lite Adventure Race: This shorter version includes 3-10 km of trekking and 16-25 km of biking on similar terrain. This option includes special tasks but does not feature a paddling section.
The race is hosted at Elkader City Park. Registration is limited to a total of 350 participants across both categories. A USARA membership is required for all participants, which can be obtained as a single-race or annual pass. Required equipment and specific race regulations are provided by the organizers to ensure safety during the navigation through the northeast Iowa landscape.
