30th Anniversary Hoot Lake Triathlon
The YMCA of the Northern Sky Hoot Lake Triathlon takes place at Hoot Lake Public Access at Godel Park in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. This event marks its 30th anniversary and supports the LIVESTRONG program at the local YMCA, which assists adult cancer survivors with physical activity and community connection.
The competition features two main categories:
- Sprint Triathlon (for individuals aged 16 and older)
- Sprint Team Relay (available for Men's, Women's, and Coed teams)
The course begins with a 1/4 mile open water swim in Hoot Lake. Participants are required to wear swim caps provided by the organizers, though wet suits and lifejackets are permitted. The cycling segment covers 15.7 miles and consists entirely of right-hand turns on roads with limited traffic control. All cyclists must adhere to state traffic laws, wear certified hard-shelled helmets, and avoid drafting. The event concludes with a 3.3 mile run.
Event logistics include packet pickup available at the YMCA the day prior to the race or at the public access site on the morning of the event. Participants must attend a mandatory pre-race meeting held shortly before the start. Overall awards are presented to the top three finishers in individual and relay categories, with additional recognition for the top finishers across several age divisions ranging from 16 to over 71.
