The Southern Hills Triathlon
The Southern Hills Triathlon is an outdoor multi-sport event held at the Angostura Recreation Area in the Black Hills, located south of Hot Springs, South Dakota. The event utilizes the natural landscape of the state park, featuring a swim segment at a sand beach characterized by clear water and a lack of rocks or vegetation.
Participants navigate a bike course that travels through the rolling terrain of nearby ranch land. The running portion of the event takes place on a paved path that follows the lake shore. The triathlon offers two primary distances for adult participants:
- Olympic
- Sprint
The event infrastructure includes a transition area located at Breakers Beach, where packet pick-up also occurs. On the day of the race, food and beverages are provided at the finish area, including grilled sandwiches for all participants who complete the course.
Recognition is provided in several categories. All youth and adult finishers receive medals upon completion of their race. Specifically for the Olympic and Sprint distances, awards are presented to the first-place overall winners, as well as first, second, and third-place awards within adult age groups. This event is organized in cooperation with the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and the Angostura State Recreation Area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
