Event overview
The Gauntlet is an out-and-back paddle race on the Lower Cahaba River that starts and finishes at the confluence with the Alabama River. Racers paddle upstream on the Lower Cahaba to a turnaround point and then return downstream, encountering the river current and other oncoming boats. The route passes river scenery and wildlife.
The event date is November 8, 2025. The start and finish location is Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, 9518 Cahaba Rd, Orrville, AL 36767. Registration for the event closed on August 5, 2025.
Distances, categories and entry

- 20 mile
Categories include Canoe, Surfski, Kayak, Rec Kayak (sit-on-top), SUP hardboard, SUP inflatable, and OC. Each category is offered as solo or tandem and by gender; tandem crews may be any mix of male and/or female. Official categories require at least three boats to be scored separately; otherwise boats are moved to the next fastest category. Racers entered in the 20 mile race on SUP inflatable or Rec Kayak must demonstrate race experience or will be moved to the 10 mile race.
Entry fees are $75 for the 20 mile race and $50 for the 10 mile race. All racers receive race swag and a finisher item. First, second, and third in a category receive special finisher items if the category has at least six entries. Prize money totals are listed for overall placings; prize payment is dependent on a minimum of 30 signups. There are no refunds except if the race is cancelled.
