41st Anniversary of West Virginia's First Triathlon
The Scenic Mountain Triathlon takes place entirely within the Monongahela National Forest under a special use permit. This event serves as the West Virginia State Championship and an Olympic qualifying event. Participants can enter as individual competitors or as part of a relay team.
The course consists of three distinct disciplines through a mountain environment:
- 0.5 mile swim in Summit Lake
- 17.1 mile bike ride over Kennison Mountain reaching an elevation of 3,988 feet
- 6.2 mile run starting at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center
The cycling portion transitions to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center, where the run phase begins. The running course leads down toward the Cranberry Glades before returning to the nature center for the finish.
All participants are required to hold a USAT membership or purchase a one-day pass. The event provides commemorative shirts to those who register by June 30th; remaining inventory is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis after this date. Registration for the triathlon remains open until July 8th. The race site is located near Richwood, West Virginia, at Summit Lake. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
