Pioneer Spirit Triathlon - Challenge
The Pioneer Spirit Triathlon offers a variety of multisport and running events held in Petersburg, Illinois. This mid-spring series includes multiple triathlon formats and a standalone running race. The swim portions of the triathlons take place in a heated indoor pool, followed by cycling on rural roads and running through historic areas.
Participants can choose from several event distances and formats:
- Mini Triathlon: A 100-yard pool swim, 5-mile bike ride on flat rural roads, and a 1-mile run.
- Sprint Triathlon: A 300-yard pool swim, 13-mile bike ride on rolling prairie roads, and 3.1-mile run.
- Tri-Challenge: A back-to-back completion of both the Mini and Sprint triathlon distances.
- 5k Run/Walk: A 3.1-mile race following the same route as the sprint triathlon run course.
- Virtual 5k: A remote 3.1-mile option where participants submit results during the week following the event.
The run course for the sprint and challenge distances passes through Petersburg, featuring views of historic architectural structures and a local cemetery. The Mini Triathlon is open to all ages, while the Sprint and Tri-Challenge are open to participants aged 12 and older. Athena and Clydesdale categories are available for the triathlon events.
Amenities provided for participants include timing chips, race bibs, finishers medals, and post-race food. Showers are available for use at the PORTA pool facility after the event. All triathlon participants are required to have a USAT membership or purchase a one-day registration. There is no registration available on the day of the event.
