The Memphis In May Triathlon is a multi-sport event held at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tennessee. The competition features a variety of distances and formats to accommodate different preferences and equipment. The event base, packet pickup, and festivities are centered at the park's Hyde Lake.
Participants can choose from several distinct race formats:
- Olympic Triathlon: A 1.5 km swim in Hyde Lake, a 40 km bike through the park and surrounding area, and a 10 km run on paved trails.
- Sprint Triathlon: A 750 m swim, 11.5 mile bike, and a 3 mile run.
- Olympic Aquabike: A 1500 m swim followed by a 24.9 mile bike ride, omitting the running portion.
- Relays: Teams of 2 or 3 people can participate in both the Olympic and Sprint triathlon distances.
The event has a long history, having been established in 1991. The swim portion utilizes a time-trial start with athletes entering the water every three seconds. The bike course travels through the park and local vicinity, while the run utilizes the paved trail network within Shelby Farms Park. Athletes receive a custom t-shirt, a finisher medal, and a post-race lunch. Race weekend activities include course previews and swimming clinics the day before the main competition.
