Matt Mason "Cowboy UP" Triathlon and Duathlon

The Matt Mason "Cowboy UP" Triathlon and Duathlon is an annual multi-sport event held at Smithville Lake Crow's Creek Park in Missouri. Established in 2012, the event serves as a memorial tribute to those who have served in the military. It is part of the Midwest Triathlon Series, which includes three separate races held over consecutive weekends. All proceeds from the event are donated to support military families.

Participants can choose from several event formats and distances:

  • Short Course Triathlon: 500 meter swim, 11 mile bike (2 laps), and a 5K run.
  • Long Course Triathlon: 1,000 meter swim, 18.8 mile bike (4 laps), and a 10K run.
  • Short Course Duathlon: 1.5 mile run, 11 mile bike (2 laps), and a 5K run.
  • Relay Teams: Available for 2 to 3 participants in various categories.

The swim portion takes place at Smithville Lake with a time trial start, where athletes enter the water every three seconds and follow a clockwise course. The bike segment begins with an incline exiting the transition area and continues onto Highway E, where athletes must complete either two or four loops depending on their distance. The run segment consists of a mostly flat, out and back course on paved paths. Water stations are positioned along the run route, with two stations for the short course and five for the long course. Awards are presented to overall winners and age group leaders in both men's and women's categories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
