Course, format and rules

The swim takes place in Lac la Belle at City Beach. Sprint athletes complete one clockwise lap; Olympic and Half Iron athletes complete two laps of their specified buoys. The event uses a rolling wave swim start with small groups entering the water in sequence.

The bike course travels rural, rolling ground moraine roads northwest of Oconomowoc, with course splits for sprint, Olympic, and Half Iron distances and sections where routes rejoin. Many roads on course have recent repaving. Half Iron athletes pass an on-course bike aid station near miles 17 and 41 with water, Gatorade, and a bathroom; there is no bike aid on the Olympic or sprint bike courses.

The run is an out-and-back route along Wisconsin Avenue and neighborhoods on the southern shore of Lac la Belle. Sprint runners turn at about 1.55 miles, Olympic at about 3.1 miles, and Half Iron runners complete two out-and-back loops. There are four run aid stations that athletes pass multiple times; aid is also available in transition and at the finish.

Race equipment and conduct rules include wearing the ankle strap timing chip for the entire race, wearing a swim cap during the swim, wearing a bike helmet during the bike, no drafting on the bike, and no headphones during the swim or bike portions. Wetsuit use depends on water temperature per published thresholds. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
