Independence Triathlon Overview
The Independence Triathlon takes place at Lake Nockamixon State Park in Quakertown, PA. This early season event features a variety of multisport options held within the park and on the surrounding roads of the Allentown region. Participants swim in the fresh waters of Lake Nockamixon and navigate a bike course that is closed to vehicular traffic.
Available distances and formats include:
- Independence Olympic Triathlon: 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, and 10 km run.
- Independence Sprint Triathlon: 750 m swim, 20 km bike, and 5 km run.
- Independence Olympic Aquabike: 1.5 km swim and 40 km bike.
- Independence Sprint Aquabike: 750 m swim and 20 km bike.
- Relay Teams: Available for both Olympic and Sprint distances.
The swim is conducted in a rectangular course marked by buoys, with water temperatures typically in the low to mid 70s. The bike segment takes place on well-paved, rolling roads that are four lanes wide and fully closed by local fire police. The Olympic distance requires two loops of this bike course, involving approximately 1,200 feet of climbing, while the Sprint distance consists of one loop.
The run course is situated on the shoulder of Route 563, featuring a rolling terrain with a mix of sun and shade. Olympic athletes complete two loops of the out-and-back course, while Sprint athletes complete one. Aid stations providing water and electrolyte drinks are located at every mile. Due to the closed bike course, participants and vehicles remain in the race site until the final cyclist has finished. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
